Landaman

Landaman or Landamann or Landammann of the German Land (state/country) and Amtmann (official secretary/) .

In many Swiss Cantons Germanic S, it acts of the title given to the President of the cantonal government.

Cantons

Today, the title of Landammann is always used in the following cantons:
  • Argovie since 1831-32 (before: Amtsbürgermeister)
  • Appenzell Rhodos-External
  • Appenzell Rhodos-Interior
  • Glaris
  • Nidwald
  • Obwald
  • Schwytz
  • Soleure
  • Uri
  • Zoug

Confederation

Although many titles evoking the presidency were allotted to the Chief of the Confederation, this title was:

Then one used the short cut of Landamman :

  • under the French occupation Napoleon i allotted as for him the title of Médiateur .

  • March 10th 1803 at December 31st 1813 the Chief of the Confederation was simply the first Magistrate of the canton where the federal Diète was held, with the title of Landammann der Schweiz / Landamman of Switzerland / Landamano della Svizzera .

  • first Landamman of Switzerland was Louis d' Affry (1743-1810), the federal Diet was held with Freiburg on July 4th 1803
