Land borders enter Spain and France

The Franco-Spanish border is the Frontière separating the Spain and the France. It separates since 1659 the Catalogne and the Pays Basque (like to a lesser extent the Gascogne) in two after nearly thousand years to common life to the inhabitants to these two human communities.

Principal border

The Franco-Spanish border extends on 623 kilometers, in the south-west of France and the North-East of Spain.

It begins in the west on the Atlantic Ocean (the Bay of Biscay) on the level from the common Frenchwoman from Hendaye and from the Spanish city from Irún.

The border follows then an head office towards the east, following to little-near the the Pyrenees until Andorre (). There, the small country stops the border between Spain and France on 56 kilometers. It begins again a little more in the east () and continues until the the Mediterranean, which it reaches on the level of Cerbère in France and Portbou in Spain.

Shortly after the Western beginning of the border, whereas this one follows the course of the Bidassoa, the island of the Pheasants located in the middle of the river has a particular frontier mode: the island is a Condominium, whose sovereignty is shared between the two countries.

History

The layout of the Franco-Spanish border goes back to the signature of the Traité of the Pyrenees between the kingdoms of Spain and France, in 1659.

The exact delimitation was carried out starting from the end of the 18th century; the definite location (?) border was establishes with the treated of Bayonne in 1856.
