The border begins on the Plateau from Guyanes by a Tripoint where meet the border between Brazil and Suriname, the border between France and Suriname and that between France and Brazil (coordinated geographical: ). Then it runs full is on 303.2 km. The litigation continued during two centuries, France and Brazil become independent installed military stations and religious missions in turn in what became the free-Brazilian Contesté. A French bill filed in 2005 envisages the opening of a bridge on the level of the city-border of Saint-Georges-in-the Oyapock in France and of Oiapoque in Brazil, making finally possible the crossing of the border by road way, whereas it is until now possible only by taking the vat which makes the shuttle in half an hour. It should be completed in 2008. On the other side of the river, the Rodovia 156, partially asphalted, makes it possible to join the capital of Amapà, Macapá.

The Oyapock river, accessible to the dugouts on the major part of its course, is crossed in many other points so much by the Amerindian S of the area (Wayana, Teko, Kali' Na, Palikur, Wayampi) whose territory is with horse on the border that by Brazilian economic migrants who come to settle in Guyana in particular the gold digger or garimpeiros which goes up Oyapock to exploit the affluents of Oyapock. Villages of garimpeiros were thus formed on Brazilian banks of Oyapock: opposite the Split Sikini and Villa Brasil opposite the borough Camopi (Brasil Villa especially developed at the time where the Amerindians of Camopi started to touch social securities). There would be in Guyana: 40000 foreigners in irregular situation, even: 200000 according to the last estimates, including 70% of Brazilian nationality coming primarily from the poor States of Amapá and the Pará which benefit from the weak monitoring of the border to come to settle in Guyana.

Monitoring

The monitoring of the Guianese borders constitutes the first circle of protection of the space center located at Kourou. The French armed forces have moreover the role of damming up the Clandestine immigration, and of controlling the traffics in all kinds coming from the adjoining countries. The control of the limit between France and Brazil just like that with Suriname is made very difficult by its length and the nature of the grounds. Except in the zone contiguous to Saint-Georges, the patrols of monitoring can be carried out only by inland waterway, by feel forest and exceptionally by helicopter, the Canopée making difficult any landing. The 3 {{E}} regiment of infantry of the Foreign legion affects two sections, raised constantly every month, with this mission. Those, formed with the combat in equatorial medium, are inserted sometimes of 50 kilometers in the forest and patrol in particular the zone of high Oyapock very isolated starting from their base from Camopi, .
