Land alliance

In the universe of Babylon 5 , the land Alliance ( Earth Alliance or EA in English) is the government of the Earth. This federation links the various great States of the planet-mother, as well as the human space colonies. Its capital is the land Dome ( Earth Dome ) in Geneva, in Switzerland.

History of Alliance

Alliance is founded in 2085 by some countries of the Earth and competition quickly the United Nations and succeeds to him into 2107. Thereafter, progressively of adhesions, Alliance faces conflicts with the independent countries. It decides to crush any opposition after the nuclear attack against San Diego (California) in 2150.

The countries founders of Alliance launch out in space colonization by establishing bases on the Moon and Mars, but research to travel more quickly than the light did not succeed. The Hyperespace had been discovered, but the scientists did not manage to send rather large objects to it.

In 2156, humanity establishes its first contact with extraterrestrial people: a patrol centaurie had located the radio operator signals sent in the hyperspace by the Land ones. Quickly, because of conflicts with people extraterrestrial, Alliance founds the land Forces. In 2231, those illustrate while coming to assistance with the Ligue of the not aligned worlds invaded by Dilgars. The Guerre of Dilgars is gained in one year by land Alliance. Especially, the nationalist vice-president William Clark plots against president Luis Santiago. He becomes president of Alliance with the death of Santiago in the explosion of the vessel Earthforce 1 close to the colony on Io on December 31st, 2258.

The Civil war of 2260-2261

Quickly, during years 2259 and 2260, Clark and its government start to frame the land company and to repress any expression separatist in the space colonies. The Guard of night denounces those which are expressed against the government.

In spring 2260, evidence that Clark made assassinate Santiago is returned publicly and the Senate begins an investigation. It cannot complete it because the president states the law martial in April; the army and the Guard of night tackle the Senate. One week later, of the civil domes Martians are bombarded because the regional government refused to relay the order of introduction of the martial law.

Part of the cruisers of the land Forces rebel and are rejoined by their companions stationed on the station Babylon 5 which declares its independence.

During one year, the Earth is insulated in a dictatorship where the opponents are rehabilitated, limited freedom of expression and where the chain of principal information, ISN, bring back the official word.

The Clark government falls when the commander de Babylon 5, John Sheridan, takes the head of a land armada against his own compatriots, after the massacre from civil vessels in escape. In December 2261, Clark commits suicide in its office. It is replaced by the Russian vice-president Susanna Luchenko.

In the last days of 2261, land Alliance reinstates the concert of the nations by adhering to the interstellar Alliance chaired by John Sheridan. A greater autonomy is granted to the space colonies, of which Mars.

Between the wars

Divisions of the civil war are difficult to regulate: it is necessary to manage the rehabilitation of the rebellious land soldiers, to bury the career of several officers having obeyed to the others of Clark most inhuman, etc

The respite is of short duration: in December 2266, the Earth is attacked by Drakhs, old allies of the Shades, which propagate in the terrestrial atmosphere a virus which condemns any human life within 5 years. The Earth is placed in quarantine by interstellar Alliance.

The land population is finally saved into 2271, but the events since the Guerre Ground-Minbari will leave many resentments among the leaders of land Alliance towards interstellar Alliance and its leaders, the Human John Sheridan and his wife Minbarie Delenn. Because of the bonds of the dictatorship of Clark with the Shades, the Land ones had avoided the effects of the war of the Shades (2259-2261) and some did not include/understand why Drakhs had attacked them.

To become Alliance

In 2762, land Alliance saw the installation of a dictatorship orwellienne which wants to make secession of interstellar Alliance by attacking it by surprise. For this purpose, it prepared reconstitutions vidéos putting in scene holograms of officers of Babylon 5. The plan is ventilated and the independent human colonies and the BOARD attack the Earth. The period is known under the name of Great Burn (Large Fire).

In the following centuries, the life on Earth includes its course as with the Middle Ages, with a fear of scientific progress. The space period is regarded as a myth, to which a religion close to Catholicism grants faith. This religion includes/understands many Rangers of the interstellar Alliance which takes care secretly on the slow rebuilding of the Earth.

A million years after the events related to the station Babylon 5, the sun of the Earth explodes in nova and a News-Ground is rested by a humanity in evolution.

Land Alliance in the series

If the logo of Alliance (E on A) is omnipresent since half of the heroes of the Televised series are members of the land Forces, Alliance in itself made of the specific appearances: intervention of a senator, visits of the Minister for the Peace or the representative of the Guard of night. They are the episodes on the coup d'etat de Clark and the civil war (third and fourth seasons) which make it possible to know the wheels of this government.

The political evolution because of Clark, then through the visions of the future ( flashforward ) of episode 422, make it possible to conclude that if humanity has, in the universe of Babylon 5 , an major importance, it remains divided between two visions. First is isolationist, tends to the dictatorship and the imposition of the supposed interests of the Earth by the force. The second wants to be opened with the relations with the other people and is capable of sacrifice and patience. The creator of this universe, Straczynski, was inspired for many the United States the years 1990 to illustrate this topic in his following works, like the Comic S Rising Stars and Midnight Nation .
