The Jin Ping Mei (金瓶梅) is an anonymous social novel (sometimes allotted to Wang Shizhen) of the 16th century, also celebrates for its erotic passages. It is known that the work was printed for the first time about 1610 in Suzhou, and the specialists seem to lean to allot of it paternity to certain Hsu Wei (1520-1593), politician and chief of a literary school " réaliste".
He is sometimes regarded as the fifth of the Four extraordinary books (四大奇书) of the Chinese literature.
This erotic novel described, in 100 chapters and 120 poetries, life of Ximen Qing, merchant, with his " femmes" (wives, concubines, maidservants).
Film adaptations were drawn from this work in Hong-Kong and Taiwan. The work remains always prohibited in continental China.
