A lan , often indicated by the Acronym English LAN of Local Area Network , is a Data-processing network on a relatively restricted geographical scale, for example a computer room, a particular dwelling, a building or a site of company. In the case of a corporate network, one often uses the term RLE for lan of company.
It makes it possible to connect, in a limited ray and on only one cable, all types of terminals (microcomputer, telephone, cash register, etc). Historically, the pioneer in this field is the network Ethernet designed by the company Rank Xerox, then IBM launched its own system, the Token ring or Token-ring in the Années 1980.
It is however the Ethernet network which was essential, thanks to the simplicity of its implementation and with the progressive increase in 10 Megabits/seconds the flows of connection, passed, then 100 Mégabits/s, to reach 1 today Gigabits/s and even 10 Gigabits/s on the most powerful networks.
Uses of the lans
The term of LAN which can cover extremely different realities, geographical, technical, etc, one will employ the term of network Intra-site for the part of the network of a company which serves a site, in opposition to the network Inter-site which connects the various sites of the company, all this being able to belong to most total the Intranet of the company or entity.
For the private individual, the LAN can be seen like a means of sharing a connection Internet, to work on same a waiter, to share data between various computers or to play network games.
