Lamp of Wood

A lamp of Wood is a diagnostic tool used in Dermatologie. It makes it possible to examine the skin of the patient with a ultraviolet light (with a wavelength of approximately 365 nanometers).

The technique making it possible to produce a source of ultra-violet was invented by Robert Williams Wood in 1903 with his " Wood' S glass" , but it is not before 1925 that this technique was used in dermatology by Margarot and Deveze for the detection of mycosic infection of the hair.

The black light is particularly useful in the diagnosis of the Erythrasma, the cutaneous mycoses (Microsporum audouini), of bacterial cutaneous infections (Corynebacteriium minutissimum, pseudomonas) and certain pigmented lesions.
