Lamoricière

The Lamoricière was a Paquebot of the Transatlantic General Compagnie, brought into service in February 1921 on the lines of North Africa, at the beginning of Marseilles, service which it will ensure until its shipwreck in 1942. In 1940, it is transformed with heating with coal.

The January 6th 1942, it leaves Algiers for Marseilles with 272 passengers and 122 team members on his board. The following day evening, it is diverted to carry help to the cargo liner Jumieges of the Company Worms, itself in difficulty off the islands Balearic Islands. The steamer essuie a violent storm: water is engulfed in the compartments by the Sabord S badly joined and the ship starts to take lodging. It launches a S.O.S and several ships go to its help, in particular the steamers General governor Chanzy and General governor of Gueydon of the Transatlantic race, but on January 9th, shortly after midday, it sinks body and goods. The shipwreck will be put on the account of the bad quality of the coal and the lack of power of the machines in the storm. Only 93 passengers and team members will be saved. Assessment: 301 died from Lamoricière, 20 died of Jumièges
