Lamentin (Martinique)

Lamentin is a common French, located in the area monodépartementale of overseas of the Martinique. With its 62,32 km, it is the largest commune in surface of Martinique. Lamentin with its 40.000 inhabitants is the second most populated city of Martinique. It is also the first industrial town of the island. Indeed, it shelters on its territory 4 industrial parks (ZI the Crack, ZI of the Prop, ZI Mangroves, ZI of Places of Weapons) and two shopping malls (Galleria and Place of Weapons).
Geography
The commune, integrated into the agglomeration of Fort-de-France, and is located about at the center of the island of Martinique.
This commune accommodates the Aéroport Martinique Aimé Césaire, the hippodrome of Carrère and the principal industrial parks of the Martinique. It is crossed by the river the Crack, the longest river of the island (30km).
History
The commune is named thus because the banks of the river the Crack were frequently visited by the Lamantin S, now disappeared from the Lesser Antilles. One day, a manatee was found failed on the banks of the river and since the common door this name. One can today see of it besides a very beautiful representation in the shape of a statue in front of the town hall of the commune.

Since 2001, the commune accommodates an antenna of the University of data processing (Supinfo). 137 students are provided education for there in 2005-2006.
Economy
Lamentin is one of the most dynamic communes of Martinique and accommodates many companies. It profits from its proximity with Fort-de-France, from its central position in the island and from the presence of the airport. It also constitutes the 2nd basin of use of the French overseas after Fort-de-France

the Saint Laurent church of Lamentin Set up at the end of the 17th century, the church Saint Laurent (street Schoelcher) took its current form at 19th and the 20th century.The Saint Laurent church contains stained glasses protected on the national inventory carrying the signature from the craftsmen from art Dagran (Bordeaux) and Maumejean (Hendaye and Paris), the latter decorating on the right and on the left the furnace bridges of Joseph Saint and the Virgin. On both sides of the porch, two monumental fabrics of the Father Arostéguy (1887-1956), auteurde many portraits and religious scenes in Martinique as in Guadeloupe, which evoke here the setting with the tomb and the resurrection of Christ (1955).
