Lamentin is a common French, located in the department of the Guadeloupe.

Geography

The commune, integrated into the agglomeration of Point-with-Clown, extends in the northern part of Low-Ground. Its borough is located at the bottom of bay of the Grand marine Cul-de-sac . Three islets are attached to him: Christophe , Fajou , Reel .

History

Founded in 1720 in a marshy zone, the common car its name, like its homonym inhabitant of Martinique of Lamentin, of the Manatee, a Marine mammal watery herbivore which has since missing of the Lesser Antilles.

At the 18th century, it owes its economic advancement with the Café, Cacao, Coton and with the Canne with sugar.

The church, the Law courts, the town hall and the presbytery were destroyed in 1920 by a cyclone and were rebuilt since by the architect Ali Tur.
