Lambesc

Lambesc is a common French, located in the department of the Rhone delta and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure.

Located in the middle of the Provence, with the foot of the chain of the Coasts, close to the Alpilles, but also not far from Aix-en-Provence and of the the Mediterranean, Lambesc knew to preserve its character of Provence and offers a very nowadays required quality of life. Policy

The town hall is currently on the right. The mayor of Lambesc is Bernard Ramond, mayor UMP. History

The presence in this area of people Celto-Ligurian, the Salyens, is certain. They founded there a market, which taken the name of “Oppidum Amboliacense”, where came to supply the Greeks of Massalia (Ier and IIe century before J.C).

The Notre Dame church of the Assomption is integrated within the pastoral unit of the 3 stones: Lambesc, Bad tempers, Saint-Cannat.

It is of style Baroque. It has a vast dome of octagonal form which confers a great luminosity to him. Its unusual enough dimensions for a parish church, are the legacy of the past from Lambesc, at the time (17th century) where the city accommodated the General meetings of the Communities of Provence.

Presence in its center of 10 vaults decorated with beautiful Retable S provencaux out of carved and coloured wood representative of art of Provence (4 of them) or out of marble: vault of the Cross (with a fresco works of J Kappeler), vault Saint Michel or Saint-Crepin (statue of the archangel out of gilded wooden of Bernus, green retable and gold, table of Dandré Bardon - 1745), vault Sainte Anne (retable out of gilded wooden, table of Jean Baptiste of Faudran - the Visitation - 1643), vault Notre-Dame de Lourdes (table of Nicolas Mignard holy representative Jean de Matha, founder about the Trinitaires - 1636), Holy Chapelle Therese, vault saint Joseph (marble furnace bridge and retable, Dead table “of St Joseph” of Jean Daré -1649), vault of the Rosary (marble furnace bridge, table “Gift of the Rosary” of Reynaud Levieux, vault of the Sacred Heart (table: “Vision of Saint Blaise”), vault of the Résurrection, vault St Eldrad (patron saint of Lambesc and the shepherds, table of Dandré Bardon - 1742 “the miracle of St Eldrad to the Novalaise”), vault of the hearts of the purgatory (retable where the allegories of the good death are represented, table of Dandré Bardon - 1745).

It has a large platform whose dimensioning obeyed the requirements of reception of the choral society of the Cathédrale Saint-Saver of Aix-en-Provence as well as an organ with three keyboards (dresser of Valate, sculptor of Aix in Provence) work of Joseph Isnard organ builder having built or taken part in the construction of other large organ like those of: Church Saint-Maximin-the-Holy-Balsam, Saint-Andrew Cathedral of Bordeaux, cathedral of Albi, Rodez. The restoration of the organ of Lambesc was launched in 2006.

Until the 18th century, many lords, resulting noble big families from Provence, reigned on Lambesc: with 8th, Eldradiens, with IXe and Xe, Piglets of Arles, in XIe and XIIe, Pontevès of the Beams. Of 1453 with 1688, Lorraine of Guise and 1688 to 1789, Lorraine de Brionne.

Under the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XVI, Lambesc played an important political role in the history of Provence. During hundred years, of 1646 with 1786, the General meetings of the communities of the country of Provence sat there, which was worth in the city the name of “Versailles inhabitant of Aix”. From this time, one still finds very beautiful private mansions a little everywhere in the city. (Hotel Cadenet Charleval, of Lauris of gash, Pagy de Valbonne, Faudran Laval, Chamas saint…)

Famous hosts remained there: in 1564, the King Charles IX and the Queen Catherine de Médicis, accompanied by future King Henri III, as well as Prince de Navarre, future Henri IV. In 1631, the Prince de Condé, in 1639, the Prince Casimir of Poland, in 1657 the Queen Christine of Sweden. Lastly, Madam de Sévigné came several times in Lambesc to return visit to his/her daughter Francoise, wife of the Count de Grignan, Lieutenant Général of the King to Provence. A letter was written and posted in Lambesc the December 20th 1672, and in several others, she speaks about her stays in the city.

Lambesc undergoes during the centuries, attacks, plunderings and exactions. Its inhabitants raised each time courageously the ruins.

In 1909 (June 11th), a strong earth tremor destroyed a great number of dwellings resulting in the death of 46 people with Lambesc and in the close localities (Rognes, Saint-Cannat, Vernègues, Pélissanne…). This seism, of Magnitude near to 6, occurred on the Faille of Trévaresse (Chevauchement).

Lastly, in 1944, the explosion of a German train of ammunition stationed in station destroyed a great number of houses. Lambesc was carried disaster victim with 22% and was quoted with the order of division, with attribution of the Military Cross 1939-1945, the November 11th 1948.
