History
Located on the slope and old beds of rollers of the river Ardeche, Lalevade draws its name from the word occitan levada equivalent with French " levée". A levada was here in the beginning a stopping of rollers, without cement, across the river. It made it possible to bring water towards the " béal" or the " béalière" (small channel) which irrigait the cultures and animated a mill. The risings of Ardeche did not leave any material trace of the oldest installations. Cemented stoppings replaced the provisional liftings during the XIXe century. The hydraulic force allowed the rise of textile industry the same time. Today the béalières of Lalevade are still maintained for the irrigation the gardens. A mini powerplant equips since 2004 the stopping with " Rosalie".Administratively, Lalevade-d' Ardeche was born on December 15th, 1903, at the same time as Bridge-with-Labeaume its neighbor, of the separation of her chief town Niègles (today hamlet of Bridge-of-Labeaume), considered perched too high by the inhabitants. In 1789, Lalevade-d' Ardeche (then Niègles) produced 5000 tons of coal per annum and contributed to the development of industries of Vivarais.
This coal finds its origin in an enclave of ground stéphanien (schisto-sandy) which offers the greatest extent on the communes of Lalevade and Prades (mine of Champgontier) and which is prolonged while being reduced in direction of Jaujac (mine of Sénentille) and the Stock. The mines of Lalevade were the principal mines of coal of the department with those of Banne.
In 1920, one counted 1350 inhabitants with Lalevade-d' Ardeche which was then a very active industrial city. Thanks to its mines of coal, its factories of tanning, its important grindings and sawmills more than 600 workmen found work. Today, the economy is directed towards tourism and the services.
Until 1982, the village was also the terminus of a line PLM then the SNCF, coming from Vogüé. A prolongation of the line until (Puy-en-Velay) via It Monastier-on-Gazeille was ambitionné as of before 1870. Many works of art were put in building site after 1906, in particular the Tunnel of the Russet-red, but the First World War definitively stopped the project, at least on the side ardéchois. The service traveller of Teil with Lalevade ceased in 1969. The old station, always visible, is a property of the commune and shelters inter-commune administrative services.
