The Lakota (or more correctly Lakĥoṫiyapi , language of Lakhotas ) is the principal dialect siouan among five what exists. The language belongs to the Langues siouan, it has the code ISO/DIS 639-3: lkt.
The Sioux name themselves: Oceti Śakowin , " seven feux" and are divided into seven tribes (Oglala, Sicangu, Miniconjou, Itazipco, Oohenunpa, Hunkpapa, and Sihasapa). The Indians lakotas live in both Dakota (Northern and Southern), distributed unequally in 4 reserves.
For the " small histoire" , Crazy Horse (Taśunka Witko) was Oglala, and Sitting Bull (Thathanka Iyothake) was Hunkpapa.
It is one of the American source languages comprising the greatest community of speakers still in life in the United States, with approximately 8000-9000 speakers, living mainly in the plains of north and the South Dakota.
The language, which did not have a clean writing, which was the case of the majority of the indigenous languages of North America, accepted for the first time a writing in 1840 by the missionaries, and has since good evolved/moved to adapt to the modern needs.
