Lakes Killarney

The Lakes Killarney is the denomination of a whole of three lakes of the National park of Killarney in the Comté of Kerry in Ireland. They are the lakes (of north in the south):

  • Lough Leane (also called Lower Lake),
  • Muckross Lake (also called Middle Lake)
  • and Upper Lake.

Presentation

Lough Leane (in Irish Log Léin ) meaning Lac of Knowledge is largest of the three. Its discharge system, the Laune, continues its race towards north while passing by Killorglin and is thrown in bay of Dingle.

The lakes are located in a steepsided valley, encircled by the solid masses of:

Ladies View is a famous point of view on the lakes and the valley, located along N71 between Killarney and Kenmare.

Some sites of interest, as well on the plan of the historical heritage, naturalness as monks, are located in the surroundings of the lakes. Among them, Ross Castle, the Abbey of Muckross, Muckross House and the island of Innisfallen.

The peninsula of Ross Island , in the east of Lough Leane, contains the oldest copper mines of the British Isles, known as of the Bronze Age 4.000 years ago. During the XIXe century, these last were exploited in an intensive way by the Herbert family, occupying then the property of Muckross House.

The lakes are also famous for the trout fishing.
