Lake of Salagou

The lake of Salagou is a lake of reserve of the Barrage of Salagou. It is located at the center of the department of the Herault, on the river Salagou, affluent of the river Lergue which is thrown in the Herault.

The lake ennoyé part of the communes of Clermont-l' Herault in the east, Liausson in the south, Octon in the west, and Those (visible all on the left on the photograph) in north. The level of water is to approximately 140 m of altitude. The lake is dominated by mounts and plates culminating to 300 m in the east and up to 407 m for Carels in the west.

History

The project of stopping was launched in the Fifties, with an aim of creating a water reserve which would support a diversification of the cultures, including/understanding the development of a fruit-bearing production, the vine growing becoming surproductive. Secondarily, the purpose of the stopping would be to regularize the risings of Hérault.
Work began in 1964 to be prolonged until the beginning of 1969.
Whereas one could think, in 1968, qu ' it would take years so that the basin of Escandorgue fills, only one very large storm filled it with half in March 1969. Other precipitations almost completely filled the basin in a few months, giving reason to calculations of the engineers.

Tourist aspect

The lake is an accessible tourist site easily since the three plus héraultaises big cities (especially with the opening of the highway has 75). The fields of interest are:

the Geology,
the nautical bathe and some activities,
the hiking and cyclists around the lake.

Geology

the basin of the Lake of Salagou draws its beauty from its single ground, the Ruffe, combination of argillaceous sediments and iron oxides. These Sedimentary rocks is dated from the Permien (- 280 million years). It is the result of a deposit in aquatic environment of calm fresh water. One can observe there old prints of Amphibien S (with the Lieude).

Here or there, you will find basaltic castings and chimneys , witnesses of volcanic activities old, but intense.
