Lake of DER-Chantecoq

The lake of DER-Chantecoq is located not far from Saint-Dizier, on the departments of the Marne and the Haute-Marne.

With a surface of 48 km, it is largest artificial Lac of Europe. Its rated capacity is of 350 Misters.

History

Built on the site of the Champaubert-with-Wood lake-tank, it was inaugurated in 1974 per Robert Galley (Minister for the Equipment). It is used today to unchoke the Marne to avoid the risings of the the Seine to Paris, like the risings of 1910 and 1924 who flooded most of the French capital. It is managed by the Institution Interdépartementale of the Storage dams of the Basin of the Seine.

The Lac of DER required work during 8 years and its construction required the destruction of three villages: Chantecoq, Champaubert-with-Wood and Nuisement-with-Wood. Today, there remains the church of Nuisement entirely dismounted then gone up with Holy-Marie-of-Lake-Nuisement (51). The cemetery was also moved.

Very known ornithological site in France for the migration of the birds: of at the end of October at the end of March, tens of thousands of cranes ashed there forward. More than 270 species of birds attend the site: wild swans, peregrine falcons, greylag gooses…

One can however practice many nautical activities there: veil, water skiing, jet-ski, board with veil, fishes, oar, bathe,…

The edges of the lake are arranged, allowing the excursion, the roller, cycling,… 77 km of banks are counted. The fauna abundant and is protected there.
