Lake Zurich
The Lake Zurich (in German Zürichsee ) is a Swiss Lac which is in the south-east of the town of Zurich. It is bordered by the cantons of Zurich, Saint-Gall and of Schwytz.
Its principal affluent is the Linth. The water of the lake is drinkable.
Lake Zurich to the shape of a 42 km length banana. It was formed after the last Glaciation when the Linth was stops by a Moraine.
It is composed of two parts, separated by a peninsula it peninsula Hurden - which rétricissement causes a fort opposite Rapperswil:
-
the first part, of Zurich at the north-western end until Rapperswil opposite the peninsula Hurden, has a 28 km length.
- the second part of the lake extends from Rapperswil until Schmerikon at the south-eastern end. It is called the Obersee (the under-lake ). Its length is of 14 km.
Until the the Middle Ages, Lake Zurich, had a third part in south-east, called Lake Tuggen, name of the city, near, of Tuggen. Today, this part is filled.
Between Stäfa and Richterswil, it 3.85 km is broad, that is to say a little less than its greater width, located between Stäfa and Wollerau. Its maximum depth is of 143 meters (between Herrliberg and Oberrieden). Its perimeter is of 87,6 km.
Opposite Rapperswil, close to the peninsula Hurden, there are two islands: the Ufenau inhabited and the Lützelau, uninhabited and protected like natural reserve.
Formerly, a footbridge of pilgrimage led Rapperswil to the other side of the lake, with Pfäffikon SZ. From there, the collar of Etzel went to Einsiedeln. This road belongs to the Pèlerinage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle. In 2001, the footbridge was rebuilt and proposes a route very appreciated by the hikers. The two sides of the lake are connected by a connection of ferry between Horgen and Meilen; but also by périnée of the lake between Rapperswil and Pfäffikon with its railroad and its highway.
In Lake Zurich or length of his banks, one made some historical discoveries like remainders of Palafitte S and objects prehistoric. One found also corners and weapons lost by the users of the historical footbridge.
Lake Zurich has cold for the last time during the winter of years 1962/63. The freezing of the lake (" Seegfrörni" in (Switzerland German) is a rare event which attracts thousands of people.
