Lake Saint-Andéol

The Lac of Saint-Andéol is one of the many lakes of the Aubrac, located close to Marchastel in Lozere.

History

At the time Gallo-Roman, the Lake Saint-Andéol was the subject of a superstitious worship which perduré like pagan worship even after the arrival of Christianity in Gévaudan. Besides saint Gregoire de Tours evokes it in his writings, and explains how Saint Ilère de Mende fought against this folklore: NT one year which exhorts them to cease these contrary worships with the divine will, in vain. This is told to us by Gregoire de Tours, which writes: “a priest, having received the episcopate, came from the chief town (urbe ipsa) to this place”. Gregoire de Tour teaches us that Ilère would have succeeds in putting an end to these practices by establishing a basilica in the honor of Saint Hilaire of Poitiers.
