Lake Peïpous

The lake Peïpous (: Peipsi-Pihkva järv : Чудско-Псковскоеозеро , Peipussee ) is vast a Lac divided between the Estonia and the Russia. It is the fourth plus big lake of Europe after those of Ladoga, of Onega in Russia, in the north of Petersbourg Saint, and of the Vänern in Sweden. It is followed by the lakes Saima and Inari to Finland.

It extends on 3.500 km ² for an average depth from 7 meters. Its maximum depth is only of 15 meters. Many fish species are present but the lake suffers from the damage related to the Soviet industrial complexes.

In 1242, the teutonic Knights and the troops of the prince of Novgorod Alexandre Nevski clashed on the cold lake at the time of the Bataille of the lake Peïpous (known in Russia under the name of Bataille on the ice).
