Lake Onega

The lake Onega (also known under the name of Onego , Onejskoe ozero , i.e., lake Onejskoe ; Finnish /Carélien: Ääninen or Äänisjärvi ) is the second lake of Europe by its extent, after the Lac Ladoga.

Description

Located at the North-West of the European Russia, in the province of Karelia. , it is on a world level 17th by its surface (9 616 km ², for a length of 248 km (of north in the south) and a width of 91,6 km)
Sa surface is to 33 m above the sea level. Its maximum depth is of 127 Mr.

This lake contains 1369 islands and small islands, most known being Kiji, re-elected for its parochial enclosure out of wooden, indexed by UNESCO. It is fed by step less than 58 rivers, and its emissary, the Svir, flows in the Lac Ladoga. The lake is connected directly to the sea Blanche by the channel Baltic-sea Blanche, to the Caspian Sea and the Black Sea by the the Volga, with the Baltic by the Svir. All these waterways allow an important traffic.

Petrozavodsk, the capital of the Republic of Karelia, is located on the west coast of the lake Onega. The Karelia surrounds the Lake Onega in the west, North and the East. In the south, it is bordered by the Oblast of Leningrad and the Oblast de Vologda.
