Lake Manly

The Lac Manly was a lake present in the Vallée of Dead the at the the United States, before the turning into a desert of the area. This lake disappeared because of evaporation and its insulation with respect to the catchment area of the river Colorado. Today, the lake does not exist any more but one large aquifer is in the basement

The lake existed for one period known as rain by the geologists (rather than icy because the glaciers did not go down until these latitudes). But the waters melt of the glaciers and the temperatures colder than today had then strongly influenced the valley.

The geologists thus call lake Manly all the demonstrations of this old stretch of water now disappeared. Its name comes from William L. Manly, one of the pioneers who crossed the valley of Dead in 1849. During large the Ice Age, fifteen thousand years ago, the lake knew its greater extension (150 to 200  m of depth, 6 with 7  km broad and approximately 70  km length) and was fed by three rivers and from many brooks. The lake disappeared by evaporation because of the general warming of planet. The other reason is the insulation of the lake compared to the basin of the Colorado. However, there remains in-depth subterranean water tablecloths. The Aquifère was fed by water of the Amargosa river and Salt Creek. It is visible in Bad Water. The floods of 2005 made it possible the Lake Manly to temporarily reappear and on a small surface; but it evaporated very quickly, leaving a salted mud which dried quickly.

However, the saline deposits that one can easily observe today are the product of an older lake which was drained only a few thousands of years ago.

Shoreline Butte has an old littoral still easy to interpret and which still shows the effect of the waves of the old lake Manly. These forms were created by the various levels reached by the lake in time -- indeed, an old lake and having no natural exit of evacuation sees its level evolving/moving with the time and the evolutions of the Climat.
