Lake Louise

Lac Louise ( Lake Louise in English) is the name of a Lac and a village in Alberta (Canada) in the National park Banff.

The Lake

In 1882, guides autochtones lead to it Tom Wilson, a workman of the Peaceful Canadian (CP), who names it lake Emerald. In 1884, it took the name of Lake Louise, in reference to the Louise princess, duchess of Argyll (1848-1939), fourth girl of the queen Victoria and marries it of the general governor, the marquis de Lorne. The people originating in the area, the Assiniboine S, however continue to call it the " lake of small the poissons".

Located at 67 km of the town of Banff, and at 190km of Calgary, it is particularly famous for its water turquoises which comes from the cast iron of the glaciers neighborhood, its temperature never exceeds a few degrees with the top of the freezing point. Length 2,4 km and broad of 1,2km, it flows in the river Bow.

On his banks, one can admire one of the most beautiful hotels of Alberta, the Fairmont Château Lake Louise Hotel, whose construction goes up with 1890 (it was restored in 1990). This hotel was named, by the review Gourmet , the hotel enjoying the “best landscape in the world”.

The village

The village of Lake Louise is located at the edge of the Route transcanadienne, to 180 km in the west of Calgary. The landscape around Lake Louise includes/understands several mountains covered with snow throughout the year: the Mount Temple (3543 m), the Mount Whyte (2983 m) and the Mount Niblock (2976 m). The village has a small shopping mall " Samson Mall" in which one can find a tourist bureau, a grocer, a bakery, and fast-food. The field skiable Lake Louise Mountain Resort is also at this place.

Tourism and Sport

The mountains offer a remarkable site for the practice of the Alpine skiing. The World cup of Alpine skiing makes halt with Lac Louise besides.
