The three islands are called Nanhu (Lake-south), Tuancheng , and Zaojian , inspired by the legendary islands of Yingzhou (瀛洲), Penglai (蓬莱), and Fangzhang (方丈), where the immortal Eight would have lived. Many details are inspired by natural landscapes of the area of the south of the Yangzi Jiang. In particular, the Western dam is an evocation of the famous dam Sudi (苏堤) on the Western Lac of Hangzhou. It diagonally cuts the southern part of the lake. Like the dam Sudi , the Western dam is connected by six bridges, of which each one with its distinctive style: the bridges Jiehu, Binfeng, Jing, Lian, and Liu. The principal bridge of the lake is the Pont with the seventeen arches, which connects bank Eastern with the island of Nanhu, which represents the mythical island of Penglai. Near the bridge, on Eastern bank, a bronze statue of an ox is. According to a Chinese legend, Yu Large the used a bronze ox to prevent a flood. As the statue is on the edge of the lake in direction of the prohibited Cité, it was undoubtedly set up to protect the latter from the floods.
