Lake Huechulafquen

The lake Huechulafquen is located within the National park Lanín, in the province Argentine of Neuquén, in Patagonie. It belongs to an important lake system with the Lac Paimún and Lac Epulafquen.

General information

It is the widest lake of the National park Lanín. Its name is made of two terms Mapudungun, language of the Mapuche S, huechu (large) and laufquen (lake): " large the lac".

Description

Located at 875 meters of altitude, its average depth is of 142 meters, with a maximum of 255 meters. It is more or less 30 km length, for 5 km of width. Its surface is of 104 km ². The volume of water which it contains is 14,77 billion tons more or less.

Average precipitations annually exceed the 1.000 mm in its basin, with a variation very marked and increasing of is in west.

At its end is, the lake Huechulafquen pours its water in Río Chimehuin, which runs towards the Atlantic through a chain of rivers: successively the Río Chimehuin, the Río Collón Curá, the Río Limay and the Río Negro. The oriental party of the lake is already in the zone of steppes of the meseta (plate) patagonienne, but in its western and central part, it is surrounded of the typical forests of the Andes of Patagonie.

Volcanicity

The lake Huechulafquen is dominated in north by the imposing mass of the volcano Lanín The area of this beautiful big lake shows definitely volcanic remains landscapes. Many its affluents have a course which curves through substrates made up of cooled lava.

Tourism

The entry of the National park Lanín is with 22 kilometers of San Martín de Los the Andes. The zone of the lake Huechulafquen includes/understands services for the campers, of the hotels, the huts to be rented, and the inns. At the beginning of the port of Puerto Canoas a service of catamarans is organized to visit the volcanic lake and its landscapes.
