Lake Garda

The Lake Garda ( it Lago di Garda or it Lago di Benaco in Italian) is one of most important the Lac S Italy NS. It is located in the north of Italy, halfway between Venice and Milan. It is in an alpine area and was formed by Glacier S at the end of the last Ice Age. The lake is divided between the provinces of Vérone (in south-east), Brescia (in south-west) and Thirty (in north). It is a high tourist place with many hotels on its banks.

Dimensions: the surface of Lake Garda is of 369,98 km ², its maximum length of 51,6 km and its greater width of 17,2 km, for a perimeter of 158,4 km. Its maximum depth is of 346 m and the altitude of the water level of 65 m above the sea level.

The septentrional part of the lake long and narrow, and is surrounded by mountains, mainly those pertaining to the solid mass of Baldo. The winter snow recovers the surrounding mountains and melts only at the beginning of the summer and by place remains until the autumn by furrows of ice. Its form is that characteristic of a river valley: one estimates indeed that this part of the lake was created by the action of Sarca, the tributary main thing of the lake. The southernmost part, broader, is due to the movement of a néozoïque glacier, which also formed in the surroundings of many morainic hills . The emissary of the lake is the Mincio, affluent of the Po.

The particularly soft climate supported the growth of certain Mediterranean plants, of which the olive-tree. One finds there even Citronnier S, phenomenon remarkable with 46 ° of northern latitude. That contributed to make Lake Garda an important international tourist destination. The small town of Salò, located at the bottom of a handle of western bank, was September 29th 1943 with the April 25th 1945, the seat of the Italian Social republic of Mussolini.

A community of communes, the Comunità del Garda , which groups 70 communes belonging to four provinces, dealt with, with especially advisory role, the defense and the total promotion of the basin of the lake and its back-country, especially for the questions touching with town and country planning and the Environnement, the water quality and the pleasure sailing, tourism and agriculture.
