Lake Futalaufquen

The Lago Futalaufquen is located in the province Argentine of Chubut, in Patagonie, The origin of its name comes from the language Mapudungun: futa = large, and laufquen = lake.

Situation

Its approximate coordinates are: 42°5' lat. Long south and 71°4'. West It is located within the National park Los Alerces. It is of glacial origin, and occupies a deep valley, old bed of a large disappeared glacier 10.000 years ago following the end of the last glaciation.

  • Its emissary the Río Futaleufú has a flow of more or less 150 cubic meters a second at the exit of the lake.

Hydrology

It belongs to a basin whose water crosses the cordillera to flow in the Pacific Ocean in Chile, that of the Río Futaleufú.
