Lake Edouard
The lake Edouard is one of the Large Lakes of Africa. It is in the Great Rift Valley, on the border between the Democratic republic of Congo and the Uganda. Its northern bank is with a few kilometers in the south of the equator. The first European to discover the lake was Henry Morton Stanley in 1888. He named it in the honor of the Prince de Galles Edouard. The lake was thereafter named lake Idi Amin or lake Idi Amin Dada according to the name of the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin Dada. It began again since its name of Lake Edouard. Its other names are Albert-Edouard and Louta zighé .
The lake Edouard is fed by the rivers Nyamugasani, Ishasha, Rutshuru, and Rwindi. It is emptied by north via the river Semliki, in the Lac Albert. It is also connected by the Canal Kazinga to the Lac George by the North-East. It is located at 920 meters of altitude, and a size of 77 kilometers out of 40, for an entire surface of 2.150 km ² (15th the broadest of the continent).
Ecology
The lake Edouard shelters many fish species, of which the Bagrus docmac , the Sarothelodon niloticus , the Sarothelodon leucostictus , the Haplochromis spp. , the Hemihaplochromis multicolur , and the Schutzia eduardiana . Fishing is an important activity for the local populations. Fauna living on the banks of the lake - including Chimpanzee S, elephant S, Crocodile S, and Lion s - is protected in the National park from Virunga in Congo and the National park Queen Elizabeth in Uganda. The zone of the lake lodges also many species of birds resident or migrating.
