Lake Chapala

The Lac of Chapala (in Spanish Lago de Chapala ) is the Lac the widest Mexico with a surface of 1.100 km ². It currently measures, roughly 80 km length on 20 broad but its depth does not exceed 10 m what does not make a great soft water reserve of it (6 billion m ³).

Geography

It is a lake of altitde (1524 m), located at 50 km in the south of Guadalajara on the border between the Mexican states of the Jalisco and the Michoacán, with for coordinates. It is fed upstream by several rivers: The Río Lerma, Río Zula, Río Huaracha, and the Río Duero. Its emissary is the Río Santiago which continues until the Pacific Ocean.

Ecology

Because of the very strong urban development of Guadalajara since 1970 and needs increasing for agriculture, the lake failed to disappear towards the end from the 20th century. Moreover, many factories located throughout the Río Lerma, contribute to the regular pollution of this lake.

This lake containing of many species endemic of Poisson S and Amphibian S and being also a refuge for many migratory birds such as for example the white Pelican, several programme of nature conservation was set up at the beginning of the year 2000. It forms besides part of the écorégion small lakes in the classification of the Global 200 of WWF.
