Lake Argentino

The Lac Argentino is a lake of Patagonie Argentine, located in province of Santa Cruz, and included partially in the National park of the glaciers.

The lake is famous for the impressive glaciers plunging directly in its water, the such Glacier Perito Moreno and the Glacier Upsala.

Description

Just like its twin the lake Viedma, it is directed of west in is, and is fed especially in the west by abundant precipitations of the Andes cordillera, within which it is, precipitations which form under these latitudes of very powerful glaciers. Its basin of drainage is located entirely in Argentinian territory.

It receives close to its Eastern end the emissary of the lake Viedma, the río Leona. Then it pours its water in its own emissary, the river Santa Cruz of which it thus constitutes the origin.

Statistical data

Lago Argentino is largest and most southern of the big lakes of Patagonie Argentina. Its level is with 187 meters of altitude. It covers a surface of 1.466 km ² and has one average depth of 150 m, reaching the 500 m in certain places. Its volume of water reaches 219,9 billion M ³.

Tourism

On its southern bank the small one is located town of El Calafate, the tourist base most attended by those which wish to explore the area.
