Lajos Kossuth

Lajos Kossuth (September 19th 1802, with Monok in the Comitat de Zemplén, in Hungary - March 20th 1894, with Turin, in Italy), patriot and Politician Hungarian.

Biography

Kossuth " Louis" Lajos (in Hungarian one always writes in first family name followed by the first name) was born in a family from Protestant minor nobility of Slovak origin. Kossuth became lawyer and took part in the Diets of 1825-1827 and 1832-1836. It thus began its political career in 1825, as a spokesperson of the Liberal party. This one will then be stopped between 1837 and 1847. In 1841, it takes the direction of the Pesti Hírlap (Newspaper of Pest). Liberal, it decides for the independence of the Hungary, the suppression of serfdom and wants to return his popular movement, in particular with the support of the farming community. He is also famous to be a large speaker. He will return on the political scene in 1848 at the time of the revolution which shakes the Europe.

During the Revolution of 1848, he is appointed of Pest, leader of the liberals. He will reach shortly after the post of minister of finances in the government of Batthyani and becomes president-regent. In July 1848, Kossuth obtains Diet the lifting of a strong Hungarian army of 20.000 men against the Croatian freedom fighters carried out by Josip Jelačić.

After several successes, the abdication of Ferdinand Ier of Austria, and the escape of Metternich, it makes vote the April 14th 1849 by the Diet the proclamation of the independence of the République of Hungary and the forfeiture of the dynasty of the Habsbourg. But the Austrian Chancellor, Felix von Schwarzenberg, refuses this independence and attacks the Hungary (with the assistance of the Russians) which capitulates the August 13rd.

Lajos Kossuth was exiled then in England, then with the the United States, tries to approach the empire of the Great Britain, but the queen Victoria will not agree to it. She is afraid of the reprisals on the continent, for her kingdom, if she supports this revolutionist. Napoleon III also refused him to support it.

He dies in Turin, in Italy, the March 20th 1894, without to be rehabilitated by the Empire of Austria.
