Lagoin
The Lagoin is an affluent of Right Bank of the Gave of Pau upstream of the agglomeration paloise, between the Mouscle and the Ousse.
Etymology
Probably derived from lacum (Latin: lake, small stretch of water, feeding trough ): Lagoin was, until the middle of the 19th century, a river with stagnant water in periods of low water level.Geography
Lagoin is born in the territory from the commune of Saint-Vincent, to 410 m of altitude, the south of the village. Initially boxed and fast in a small valley between the wood of Coarraze ( forest of Carrasquet and wood of Sargaillouse ), it emerges in Coarraze in the “plain of Nay”, Batbielle or Vath Vielha, the broad alluvial plain of Gave between Lestelle-Bétharram and Meillon, upstream of Pau. Its course then follows the northern edge of this plain, with the foot of the slopes. It joined the gave of Pau with Aressy.
Lagoin has a primarily rain mode: risings related to the strong rains, misses water in period of dryness. Installations related to the “Canal of Lagoin” moderated, as of the 19th century, these irregularities. Between Coarraze and Aressy, the bed of Lagoin “was rectified” in the years 1980, to remove the meanders and to facilitate the water run-off of them.
Common crossings
Resulting from Saint-Vincent, it crosses then the territory of Coarraze.Lagoin runs then in edge of five villages which settled on its left bank: Bénéjacq, Bordères, Lagos, Beuste and Angaïs. It crosses also the territories of Boeil-Bezing, Bordes, Assat, Meillon and Aressy - benches along the gave.
Principal affluents
Lagoin receives some small affluents on its Right Bank:- (D) Badé in Coarraze, 5.8 km
- (D) the Aguabelle in Bordères, 5.4 km
- (D) Gabale , 5.2 km, of the wood of Bordères
- (D) the Arrebigne in Assat.
Mills of Lagoin
Although modest river with the irregular flow, Lagoin allowed the installation of many Moulin S. At the end of the 18th century, the Carte of Cassini indicates eight of them to Bénéjacq, Bordères, Lagos, Beuste (two mills), Angaïs (two mills), Assat. Two small mills were also on the territory of Saint-Vincent, upstream of the wood of Coarraze. The “refeeding” of Lagoin, during the creation of the channel of Lagoin, starting from the middle of the 19th century allowed new installations Bordères, Assat. Certain mills then associated a saw or a Batteuse with their installations (Angaïs). In the years 1920-1930, some mills also installed dynamo S to produce electricity (Assat).
The channel of Lagoin
The “channel of Lagoin” is a work of irrigation, carried out between 1859 and 1869 which allows the irrigation of the “plain of Lagoin”.See also: Channel of Lagoin
