Lagavulin

Lagavulin is a Distillerie of Whiskey located on the island of Islay on the west coast of the Scotland. It is one of three distillings under operation on the east coast of Islay with Ardbeg and Laphroaig.

Founded in 1816, distilling belongs today to the group Diageo. Based on the site of old illicit distillings which one finds the trace as of 1742, Lagavulin knew several successive enlargings. It has two wash stills and two spirit stills . Its production is approximately 1,7 per annum million liters of alcohol.

Lagavulin produces a whiskey characterized by the power of the flavors of Tourbe and smoke, but however less monolithic than those produced by its neighbors of the east coast, because of an ageing out of barrels of sherry. This traditional operation appears with the nose by flavors pointing out nut, then stops some by a very light feeling of acidity, related with that which one finds in the spirits resulting from grapes like the Armagnac. That makes of it a balanced and powerful whiskey, very interesting to drink at the end of the meal, but to hold for unconditional out of aperitif. Indeed the intense flavors of peat and smoke can surprise, to even be unpleasant to a palate not informed.

Several versions exist on the market:

  • special Lagavulin 12 years release (gross of barrel), two versions limited to nine thousand specimens each of 58,2 and 57,7%.

  • Lagavulin 16 years which is the floret of the range of the classic malts 43%.
  • Lagavulin distillers edition (refined in barrels of type of vine sherry pedro-ximénez) 43%.
  • Lagavulin 25 years (limited edition with nine thousand bottles) 57,2%.
  • Lagavulin 30 years.
