Lafayette is a city located in the American State of the Louisiana at the edge of the Rivière Vermilion. The urban unit that constitute Lafayette and its suburbs is in the Paroisse of Lafayette ( Lafayette Parish ) and counts nearly 196.000 inhabitants. With the census of 2005, the population of the only town of Lafayette counted nearly 110.300 inhabitants. Located in the middle of the Acadiana to 208 kilometers at the west of La Nouvelle-Orléans in Louisiana, Lafayette is the center of the ''' country cadien ''' or ''' cajun '''.
History
The city was founded in 1821 by a Acadien, Jean Mouton. Initially named Vermilionville , it took the name of Lafayette in 1884, in the honor of the marquis of Fayette.
Geography
Lafayette is located at 30°12' 50" of northern latitude and 92°1' 46" of western longitude (30.213901, -92.029363), in the south of the Louisiana, with the junction of highways 10 and 49.
Traditions
Single city in its kind which combines cultural traditions and modernism, it was mainly émancipée these last decades as a shopping mall and in the medical and university fields. Natural gas and oil pole, it is also the second tourist destination of the Louisiana.
