Lafarge is a French group of construction materials, world leader in his sector, followed by Holcim. It is present in four principal activities: Concrete and Aggregate S, Cement, Plaster, Roof, and in 75 countries. Its turnover, in 2003, rose to 13,658 billion euros, including 47% in cement, 33% in the concrete and the aggregates, 11% in the plaster and 9% in the roofs. The group employs approximately: 71000 people in the world.

History
- 1833 : the company is founded by Leon Pavin de Lafarge , by resumption of a family activity launched in 1749; the factory exploits a stone quarry with lime in the Saint-Victor mountain dominating the the Rhone between Teil and Viviers, in Ardèche, France.
- 1864 : Delivery of 11.000 tons lime for the Suez Canal; it is the first building site of international scale for the company.
- 1919 : Transformation into SA under the name of " Public limit company of limes and cements of Lafarge and Teil ".
- 1939 : Lafarge is the first French cement-manufacturer.
- 1980 : Fusion with the Belgian company Coppée gives rise to the Groupe Lafarge Coppée .
- 1997 : the acquisition of the British Redland makes it possible Lafarge to enter the market of the Tuile S (roof).
- July 12th 2001: the acquisition of the British group Blue Circle Industries Plc (BCI) makes it possible Lafarge to become the first world cement producer in front of Switzerland Holcim;
pour to finance this purchase, Lafarge resells in the form of LBO the essence of its material branch of specialities, renamed Materis - June 29th 2004: Lafarge decides to double the capacity of its cement factory of Dujiangyan, in China, to carry it to 2,4 million tons, and signs an partnership agreement with Shui One Construction Materials Limited (SOCAM), Chinese cement-manufacturer with dimensions with Hong-Kong.
The group
The group, which includes/understands more: 1240 companies held mainly and approximately 230 companies held in the form of participations, is very decentralized. It is organized in three branches:- cement,
- aggregates and concrete
- plaster
The units have a competence limited to an geographical area, generally a country, for a given activity.
The seat of the group, located at Paris, includes/understands the head office, the executive committee and the whole of the staff managements.
