Laeken
Laeken (in Dutch Laken ) is an old commune of the north of the Région of Brussels-Capital (zip code: B-1020), attached to the Town of Brussels in 1921.
The district of Laeken shelters in particular, the royal field, the Château of Laeken (or castle of Schoonenberg) (1784), which was residence of the general governors Albert of Saxony-Teschen and Marie-Christine of Habsbourg-Lorraine, and where Napoleon I {{er}} signed the declaration of war to the Russia in 1812, the residence of the dukes of the Brabant, the greenhouses of Laeken (1873) as well as the Notre-Dame church whose crypt contains the burials of the sovereigns and the cemetery which depends on it, known for its wealth of monuments and sculptures.
The old commune has six relatively important library and subway stations (Pannenhuis, Bockstael, Stuyvenberg, Houba-Brugmann, Heysel and King Baudouin) (the library of Laeken).
On the territory of Laeken, also the plate of the Heysel is, where the World Fair was held of 1958 and which includes/understands the Stade King-Baudouin, the Atomium, the Exhibition site of Brussels and Brupark (Kinépolis, Mini-Europe, Océade and The Village) as well as the Wearing of Brussels to side of which was set up the Monument with Work of Constantin Meunier.
The castle of Laeken is the cradle of the variety of Belgian sheepdog LAEKENOIS, the Belgian variety of shepherd with hard hairs. Laeken is near Neder-Over-Heembeek.
History
The oldest mention of the village is in a diploma of 1080, where appears the name of Gilbert de Lacha . This name would derive from Germanic “Releases”, which means “water”. With the Middle Ages, Laeken belonged to the “tank”, i.e. the suburbs, of the Ville of Brussels. The village was annexed to the city under the reign of Jean III of the Brabant in 1331. It became again a commune only in 1795, under the French occupation. Attached to the town of Brussels in 1921, Laeken acquired an international dimension only at the time of the European top of Laeken (14 - December 15th 2001), marked by the Déclaration of Laeken.
