Mine uranium

In 1955 the expolitation of the mine of Uranium located on the territory of the commune and that of Ris ends. Two years later, in 1957 it is the factory of concentration of the ore which ceases its activity. The factory is dismantled, but the materials were used as fill of the roads. The association Of study and defense of the environment (AEDELEC) which will become " Puy-de-Dôme Nature Environment undertook in the Années 1980 a study on the old uranium expoitations in the Puy-de-Dôme, in particular on the communes of Lachaux of Ambert. It appears that the schoolyard of Lachaux was embanked with materials coming from the mine of the Plan Bigay
  • In February 1986 the AEDELEC and the collective Bois Blacks valley To combine made carry out first series of measure in the schoolyard which permetait to clearly detect a rate of radioactivity to the top of the normal.
Several couriers were sent to the prefect, with the inspector of accademy, the director of the DDASS, these couriers remained without effect. The AEDELEC contacted the CRIIRAD which took measurements of Radon 222 in a classroom in December 1988 and in the court in April 1989. The results were reassuring with 24 disintegrations a second for one cubic meter from air inside and outside 38.
  • in 1989 the CRIIRAD carried out controls radiametric in the schoolyard and a taking away of surface ground.
The measurement of the surface sample showed a usual uranium content, the radiation source was thus localized in the embankments.
  • in 2000 the AEDELEC become " Puy-de-Dôme Nature environnement" began again an important work on the old Uranium mines of the Puy-de-Dôme.
The report of this work which had been sent to the prefect brought COGEMA to carried out important work of security of several contaminated sites. At the time of a meeting between " Puy-de-Dôme Nature environnement" and the COGEMA on the site of Rofin, has situation of the school of Lachaux was evoked, but in vain.
  • In April 2006, a new campaign of die radiametric is carried out by two coeds of the Institute of alpine geography of Grenoble. In May 2006 the team of the CRIIRAD and voluntary of " Puy-de-Dôme Nature environnement" new measurements carried out which showed anomalies.
These measurements were taken with a portable scintillometer DG5 and a GPS. Anomalies were detected and a stone was taken on the surface. A DG5 gives measurements of the flow of radiation expressed in shocks a second (c/s). The natural level on sedimentary ground is of approximately 20c/s. On granitic grounds as in Lachaux it is of 200c/s.
In the schoolyard several zones gave rates of more than 1000c/s with points to more 2000c/s, on stone measurements gave a rate of 8000c/s.
The CRIIRAD addressed a mail to the mayor of Lachaux, recommending complete scouring without delay of the schoolyard, the mayor informed at once the prefect and the academy. A meter plan was entrusted to SUBATECH, Laboratoire of IN2P3 attached to the school of the mines of Nantes, which is the usual partner of the COGEMA, when this one needs a laboratory indépendant.
The ground of the schoolyard was pickled during the pemière fortnight of August, the mayor authorized the representatives of the CRIIRAD and " Puy-de-Dôme Nature environnement" to attend work, their observations and the measurements taken with the DG5 obliged the COGEMA to withdraw a little more ground than envisaged.

The Ground floor

Of a surface of 88 hectares, this site constitutes a Natural Zone of Floristic and Faunistic Ecological Interest of level 1 indexed by the Regional management of the environment of Auvergne (Diren).

According to Diren, Rez de Sol constitutes the greatest quartz seam of the Massif Central making covered on nearly one kilometer and culminating with 943 meters of altitude. It is of unquestionable landscape interest related on particular geology, the panorama open on the Solid mass of the Wood-Blacks and the plain of Limagne.

The site is primarily forester, covered with thin coppices of Chêne S and clearings on skeletal grounds. These chênais acido-xerophilous, in cash poor, are penetrated of mountain species: abundant layer of Bilberry, white Service-tree, Sorb of the bird-catchers, Hêtre… the homogeneity of the forests of leafy trees interesting well that are threatened by the afforestation in coniferous tree.

Fauna is made up of typically forest nicheuses species: Bondrée apivore, Woodcock, Crossbill of the fir trees, tufted Tit,…

This site is accessible by a small way leaving D43 little time after the place known as " Plan of saule" , on D43, to approximately 4 km of the borough of Lachaux.

Pierre of blood

It is about a rock with Cupule out of granite from 20 to 30 m3 of granite with presence of basins and seats. The local legend, as brings it back on the spot a visible tourist document a few years ago still, made of them a stone with sacrifice of the time of the druids.

Indeed, some identified in this monument megalithic, the place of the druid (torturer) and that of his victim. When the druid cut the head of his victim, this one rolled in a kind of narrow part and stopped at a precise point. Blood, continued in the narrow part and could thus be recovered in against-low.

The rock is located close to the locality " Plan of james" on D43 when one leaves the borough of Lachaux in direction of the Ground floor.

Another rock with cup much more important is located at the limit of the communes of Lachaux and the place says Rongère-Mountain (common Châteldon): The Rock of Combeau.
