Labourd
The Labourd ( have Lapurdi in have will euskara , the language Basque) is the most Western province of Iparralde (or Basque Country northern or French). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Bayonne, department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques.
Geography
Labourd is delimited by:- the Adour and the Gascogne in north (department of the Moors), except the Gascon communes of the community of Bayonne-Rebated joint-Biarritz agglomeration integrated into the Yrénées-Atlantiques.
- the the Bay of Biscay in the west
- the Low-Navarre in the east
- the Guipúzcoa (Bidasoa-Txingudi) and the the Community Forale de Navarre (Baztan, Cinco Villas) in the south.
Its historical capital is Ustaritz ( Uztaritze ), and its economic capital is Bayonne ( Baiona ), seat of évêché and chief town of district.
Its surface is of 858 km ², is 4,22 % of the entire surface of the Basque Country (northern and southern), and its population of 205 000 inhabitants, which makes some the most populated of the three provinces of Iparralde.
Climate and relief
Labourd knows a oceanic Climat soft (average temperatures: 4 with 12° in winter, 16 with 24° in summer). Its relief is made hills, whose altitude increases towards the east and the south (buttresses of the the Pyrenees). The area of Bas-Adour is as for it punt (flat Landes of Gascogne).The 4 principal rivers and rivers which traverse it are:
- the Adour ( Aturri out of Basque)
- the Nive ( Errobi out of Basque)
- the Bubble ( Urdazuri out of Basque)
- the Bidassoa ( Bidasoa out of Basque)
Spoken languages
- French (official language);
- Basque or will euskara (vernacular language in all Labourd, spoken by approximately 26 % of the population including 17.1% in the BAB and 44% in the remainder of Labourd);
- Gascon/Occitan (language also vernacular of the area of Bas-Adour: Bayonne, Rebated joint, Boucau, spoken by approximately 16% in Castilian , rather used BAB
- in the border zone (Hendaye…).
