5 Departments

Scientific computation

The department Scientific computation gathers the activities concerning calculation symbolic system and numerical calculation.

A project is devoted to the resolution of the algebraic equations or inequalities. The main aim is to establish and establish effective algorithms providing of the guaranteed results. Certain important contributions of this project relate to the sciences applied like cryptography, the correction of error of codes, the robotics or the theory of the signal.

Another project is centered on the development of the library CADNA and the software workshop SOFA to estimate and study the numerical precision of the results obtained with the arithmetic ones finished with floating decimal point or fixed point. This project includes the study of the numerical quality of scientific codes like the chaotic library CPC or systems.

Other actions are carried out. The first combines the algorithms symbolic systems and numerical to increase their effectiveness while preserving the guaranteed aspect of the results. Second is devoted to the development of effective and adaptive numerical algorithms for the grids of calculation. A last action relates to the analysis of images. It includes all the stages of a process of image of the data acquisition, process low-level with the processes high-level like the three-dimensional data and the evolution temporal of structures in imagery.

Decision, Systems Intelligent and Operations research

The activities of the department “Decision, Systems Intelligent and Operations research” (DESIRE) relate to the Artificial intelligence and the Operations research; they concentrate on the problems of decision, optimization the adaptive and systems. Undertaken work covers a broad spectrum, including theoretical aspects (model formal, axiomatic analyzes, studies of complexity), the development of effective algorithms (exact or approximate) for the complexes solution to problem, the design of intelligent systems (adaptive agents, Systèmes multi-agents, assistance systems with the decision, of assistance to the formation), and their implementation within industrial applications. The department DESIRE is organized in 5 teams:

  • RO ( complexity, combinative Optimization, scheduling, satisfiability, routing in the networks),
  • DECISION (decision and multicriterion optimization, group decision, decision in the dubious one and the risk, assistance systems with the decision, context),
  • SMA (coordination, distributed decision and planning multi-agent, dialog and interaction, simulation),
  • ANIMAT (training, development and evolution of artificial systems biomimetic)
  • MOCAH (interactive environments of human training, modeling of learning, metadata, cognitive modeling).
Within the department, the main axes of co-operation between the teams relate to combinative optimization multi-objectives (DECISION/RO), the planning based on the decision theory (DECISION/ANIMAT/SMA), the human and artificial training (ANIMAT/SMA/MOCAH).

Data and Artificial Training

Research of the department Given and Artificial Training are centered around machine, statistical learning or symbolic system, and of the distributed databases. Among the methods usually employed for the basic research and applied developed by DAPA, one can quote the probabilistic methods, the networks of neurons, fuzzy logic, the techniques of aggregation, the training based on the explanation and the métaconnaissances. The applications aimed in the department cover a vast going spectrum of the search for adaptive or selective information in various media (text, Web, images and vidéos) with the effective management of data in networks on broad scale (par-with-par, grid, cluster PC). The search for information based on the contents and the interrogation of databases are two approaches complementary to treat heterogeneous data. Structured or semi-structured information is studied in particular, for example using networks bayésiens to organize documents XML automatically or to extract specific information from it. The replication of data and balancing of load are among the techniques of advanced databases used in DAPA, which is also based on the logical organization of the network, the distributed indexing and the adaptive routing for effective systems of interrogation. The multi-media search for information is based on an indexing semantic and reinforced by the joint use of several media. Problems such as the analysis of risk, the fusion of heterogeneous information and the discovery of knowledge are approached in databases of big size. Methods of analysis of use of Internet, forecast of interest and recommendation help the user to interact with the Web and to extract relevant information from it. More generally, of research in modeling of the user and personalization of interfaces and interactive systems are developed in department DAPA, for example with regard to adaptive navigation and the interfaces pens.

Networks and Systems Distributed

The department “Networks and Systems Distributed” concentrates on the design of solutions to build and manage the networks and systems of the future. It consists of four teams: MoVe (Modeling and Checking), TREAT (Distribution and Management of the Applications to Broad Scale), NPA (Networks and Analysis Performances) and HEADLIGHT.

The MoVE team concentrates her research on the modeling and the analysis of components distributed and interopérables. She aims at providing techniques of modeling, tools for checking, generators of program, to help the originators of systems to build applications distributed. These techniques aim at functioning in the context of approach MDD (Model Driven Development).

TREAT is a common research team with the INRIA. The research tasks of TREAT aim at the management of applications distributed to broad scale: to allow to adapt applications distributed to the configurations of grid and Par-with-par. It concentrates on the tolerance with the faults, the management of counterpart, and the dynamic adaptation. Basically, TREAT proposes the use of the active replication to tolerate faults and to reduce the access times to the data, while adapting dynamically to the constraints of the environment of execution and the evolution of the behavior of the application.

Team NPA aims at developing a vision for the Internet of the future, like conceiving solutions to represent it and control it. The target of the team is the control of the omnipresent, mobile and flexible networks which increase everywhere in the private and professional environments. The heart of our work relates to problems involved in multi-media and the mobile networks, with the management of resources, extensibility, the ambient networks, and the network management of contents. In addition, a significant work is developed around the measurement of the Internet, the modeling and the engineering of the traffic.

The HEADLIGHT team aims at developing the future generation of telecommunication networks. The protocols IP (Internet Protocol), TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) and UDP (User Datagram Protocol) make it possible to carry out the communications in world Internet. These protocols are badly adapted to the new generations of networks in particular the networks of sensors or the networks ad hoc. The objective of HEADLIGHT is to propose a protocol of new generation able to adapt to its environment. This intelligent protocol will have to be able to metamorphose connection in connection to take account of the local constraints. In this research, various solutions, resulting from the autonomous networks, active networks and systems multi-agents, will be tested and compared.

Systems embarked on chip

The department “Systems embarked on chip” of the LIP6 concentrates its research on the methods and tools of systems design multiprocessors integrated on chip (MPSoC).

  • On the level “system”, research carry on the techniques of joint design software material/(environment DSX), virtual prototyping (SoCLib project), the sytèmes of exploitation real-time embarked (project MUTEK), the microphone-networks integrated on chip (SPIN project), the models of communication software material/, the methods of formal checking, the architecture of the processors multi-core, and the techniques of iterative compilation for the embarked software. LiP6 ensures the coordination of the SoCLib national project, which aims at the development of an open platform of modeling and simulation of MPSoCs.

  • On the level “circuit”, the department PLOWSHARE continues its research in CAD/VLSI, through the project CORIOLIS, which aims at the development of new tools of synthesis/placement/routing adapted to the nanometric manufactoring processes. Other research relates on the modeling of the interconnections and the analysis of cross talk, on new architectures of embarked matrix FPGA and to the optimization of the arithmetic operators. Project CAIRO+ aims at dévaloppement environment of design of generic and reusable analogical components, such as numerical analogical converters.
