The label of wine is a piece of paper stuck on a bottle of wine and on which information in connection with the Vin is printed, its contents and its origin.

If the wine out of bottle cannot be tasted, the label becomes a good information source making it possible to the consumer to carry out his choice. The label can also be illustrated drawings of the wine field, of reproduction of works of art but also play, for example, on the Typographie of the various mentions.

Indications on the wine label

The system of wine classification is different from one country to another. In certain countries classification is made by area and sector. In others, it is, for example, only necessary to indicate the year of production.

In Europe, labellings are relatively constraining. If each Member State must follow certain rules, it is however free to employ its own system of classification.

According to this payment, the mentions following must appear on the label:

  • denomination, for example " Local wine " , " Table wine " , " AOC ",
  • name and addresses of the producer, the bottler or the salesman of wine,
  • name of the country of origin for all the wines intended for export,
  • contained (the quantity without packing, for example " 75cl" ,
  • percentage of the volume of alcohol so higher than 1,2%, the tolerated error being of 0,5%.

The wine producer can add extra informations. Most current are:

  • a more precise mention of the type of wine: " brut" , " half sec" …,
  • the year of vintage: it is obligatory on the label of the wines " primeur" and " nouveaux" ,
  • the type of Cépage, if it is determining for comprehension wine; for example Chardonnay, Merlot, white Pinot and Syrah…,
  • the name of those which are implied in the distribution, for example " selected by… " , " imported by… " ,
  • medals or other prices granted to the wine,
  • recommendations for the use, for example " to serve frais".

It is also called Oenographilie or œnosémiophilie . The collections can be purely oenophilists, the classification is carried out then by area, name and field, or sets of themes: labels its then classified according to whether they contain animals, buildings, works of art, traditional costumes, vehicles, or being classified by first names, etc
