Labastide-Villefranche is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

History

This small village does not have in particular history if it is not that it was used as defensive station thanks to its keep which is located, as well as the village, at the top of a hill. Formerly, the village counted nearly 1000 inhabitants but after the weekly market had ceased, the village started to see decreasing its number of inhabitants: it passed of more than 1000 to nearly 300 inhabitants. It is also known for its 5 lakes which are the remainder of a large glacier. In connection with those, not badly of legends were imagined. For example, it was known as that a first village had existed in Labastide but which it would be today under water of a lake. The city was founded in 1392 per Marguerite of béarn to make during with the English claims of Hastingues and Bayonne. One gave to each colonist a ground corner free from taxes from where the name of Villefranche. The grounds were taken on the villages neighborhood what gave many disputes and lawsuit. In excavations made in 1898, one discovered many traces of the lake cities which preceded Labastide. Professor Garrigou-Lagrange left a vase bronze of the lake of Mirailhs. The city is famous to have embraced the Protestant religion among the first in Béarn and to have built a temple. After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, some families of Labastide, like Majendie, left Béarn for England where their descendants remain. In 1620 after the edict of hand raised of Louis XIII there were nothing any more but 2 catholics with Labastide! Before the Revolution it is the reverse: there are not almost more Protestants so much so that the bishop of Bayonne Labastide will call the " city; more religieuse" of its diocese. The lords of Labastide were forced during Terror and were saved by a Protestant of the city which gave them asylum and help. The law courts of the jurats where many important businesses were judged burned during the fire of the city in 1763. The current town hall is built in its place. It should be noted that Labastide was place chief of canton of 1790 to 1792. A gendarmerie with horse was even installed there. The building still remains. The bacillus of the cholera was brought to Labastide by an officer originating in the village and which returned from the campaigns of Sébastopol. The epidemic was propagated in all the canton of Dirtied by making many victims.

The village counted a coupled Protestant temple with the Tower, destroyed in 1682, and a vault of Saint-Sebastien de Jasses, destroyed today.

; Church Burials of the family of Bertier, heiress of the family of Habas, lords of the place.

; Priory of Ordios Distant of the borough of more than 7 km, founded in 1150 and which keep proud pace although it was transformed into cattle shed in 1792. Moving sculptures are still noticed there of which a portrait of Pierre de Béarn. The commandery of Ordios accommodated the pilgrims of Compostelle.

; Castle Jewel The nail of the village, with the tower of defense, is surprising it Bijou castle. At the origin, simple Gentilhommière built by certain Dussine, then arranged by Mrs Combes, born Saint-Macary, who spent of considerable fortunes to build the current castle. One admires in the park a Breton cloister of XIIIe reconstituted century, a temple of the Love, a landing stage, a neo-gothic vault in which one found an old crucifix sévillan formerly. Mrs Combes made deviate the secondary road to trace her park. After various fortunes, the castle was abandoned. Victim of a fire a few years ago, its roof of zinc reflects only imperfectly last splendors.

; Lasalle house Built on an old Roman temple dedicated to Mercure near the castle, this house was the housing of the officers of the garrison. In 1814, it was occupied by English officers.

; House known as “of Jeanne d' Albret” She slept there with her son Henri IV in 1564. In this maiosn was tortured for purposes of consents, the criminal Pilate, lieutenant de Audijos, in revolt against the gabelle one.
