LLC Concept

LLC Concept is a format of its numerical associated with a film 35 millimetres developped at the point at the end of the Années 1980 by two French Elisabeth Löchen and Pascal Chédeville (from where his name of LLC).

Technique

Its operation rests on synchronization between a magneto-optical Disque of the type CD and the film of projected film. This synchronization is ensured by a temporal code, left code-bars printed on the film, between the perforations and the edge of the film, and thus on a part not yet used that it is for the recording of the image or that of the analogical sound. With this temporal code a position is associated on the disc, which makes it possible to have a perfect synchronization between the sound and the image, though it arrives at the copy of film. In addition, this process is compatible with the older analogical formats type Dolby SR, Dolby stereo or even mono since it does not touch of anything with the part of the film where these formats store the sound.

Format LLC exists in two versions

the LLC 4. Four sound channels can be restored, the first three correspondent with enclosures located in the room, on the left, on the right and in the center of the screen, the fourth being divided to him between the enclosures of environments distributed throughout the room, on the right and on the left.
the LLC 6 correspondent with a more traditional sound 5.1.

This separation of the supports of the sound and the image had been tried already at the dawn of the cinema, with discs vinyls, but the difficulties to synchronize image and its had been crippling.

Commercial exploitation

Process LLC Concept had a very short commercial existence. Indeed, three years after its appearance, it was supplanted by SDR, a very similar process that the authors of the LLC Concept showed plagiarism besides. The patents of the SDR were strictly identical to those of the LLC and they had been deposited 18 months later! It is what was worth with the film Jurassic Park , the first film exploiting the SDR, to be projected only into analogical in France, following a decision of the French court. But, the SDR having been very quickly adopted by the majority of weight-heavy Hollywood which did not want to displease in Spielberg, the founders of the LLC Concept were obliged to yield their patents to American in order to avoid being completely made dispossess of their invention for nothing.

Despite everything, and because of the few years in advance that the LLC Concept had on the SDR, of many films were distributed with this process, among which one can quote Cyrano of Bergerac of Jean-Paul Rappeneau, the Lover realized by Jean-Jacques Annaud, Every morning of the world of Alain Corneau, BASIC Instinct of Paul Verhoeven, " Cliffhanger" of Renny Harlin or Arizona Dream of Emir Kusturica. Certain Parisian rooms as the max Linder Panorama organize still sometimes projections of some of these films in LLC Concept.
