  • Egypt: The first locatable structured habitats appear in edge of the delta and the valley of the the Nile in the last part of the Life and at the beginning of thousand-year-old Ve. The most former site-witness of a real sedentarisation is Mérimdé Beni Salamé (- 5400, - 5000), in the south-west of the delta. On more than 20 hectares, is organized a whole of small houses of oval plan (2 to 3 m in diameter), partly buried, built on both sides nonrectilinear “streets”. A cob wall supports, either a conical roof supported by a central pillar, or a roof with double slope. Inside a hearth and a buried earthenware jar are laid out which was used as water reserve. Outside many silos, surfaces with grain could be identified. A red and black pottery, glazed or not, rather rough, and tools of abundant flint still characterize this agricultural borough.
    • With Mérimbé, the breeding (Bovidae, sheep, porcine) and the culture of the cereals (corn and barley) are practiced not only on the easily flooded grounds, but also on the others, further away from the valley thanks to a sufficient pluviometry. Hunting (geese and ducks, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and antelopes) and especially fishing provide an essential share of the resources.
    • In a separated cemetery, established near the habitat, the late ones are buried in oval pits lying on the side in fetal position. Only of young children are buried in the habitat even. The evolution of the site can be followed in stratigraphy and horizontal extension over more than one half-millenium. The diggers of Mérimbé want to see in the first time of the bonds with the Middle East, of the African traces (saharo-Sudanese women) then. The last levels delivered the first human figurines out of terra cotta known in Egypt.
