LIST
see also: Etymology of LIST
A list is a succession of elements juxtaposed or presented in column (each one of them being possibly preceded by a remarkable graphic element: chip, Indent, Asterisk, etc).
The elements can be or not ordered (by Alphabetical order, chronological, etc).
A list can be exhaustive, or not, in which case the writer will be able to announce it to the reader by Points of suspension or by “etc”.
Some examples of lists:
- a list is a structure of data, in data-processing Programmation,
- a Liste of marriage,
- a Black list,
- a list of races counts the products to be bought in a trade,
- a Todo list is a list of tasks to be carried out,
- a Checklist is a list of points to be checked before beginning something,
- a Manifeste counts all that is embarked on board an aircraft or a ship: passengers and/or goods.
The list is also a poetic principle practiced as of the Moyen-âge. Eustace Deschamps and the Rhetoriqueurs as Jean Molinet were enthusiastic, just as the Oulipo (Georges Perec, Raymond Queneau).
