Lévis is a Québécois city and a territory equivalent to a regional Municipalité of county in the administrative area of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains of which it is the chief town. The town of Lévis is located on the Bank-South of the Fleuve the St. Lawrence opposite the town of Quebec, between Beaumont and Saint-Antoine-with-Tilly. Its population is of 129.521 in 2006.
It has the greatest industrial center of the area of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains in the district Saint-Romuald. The Ultramar refinery, largest at the East of Canada, is also located in this sector. In the east of the city, in the Lauzon sector, one finds also the maritime building site Davie Quebec Inc. We also find the factory Frito-Lay Canada, belonging to the multinational PepsiCo (resulting from a partnership between Pepsi-Cola and Frito-Lay). Moreover, Lévis was named city of the year 2005 for its economic development.
History

It is about a historical chronology which presents the great events which marked the birth of the Bank-South of Quebec. In particular, the foundation of the seigniory of Lauzon in 1636, its colonization in 1647, the births of the old surrounding municipalities, the foundation of the town of Lévis and its evolution until today.
Birth of the Bank-South of Quebec by the creation of the seigniory of Lauzon
The territory of the Bank-South of Quebec accepted various denominations before its official colonization in 1647. Its first European territorial name was the Cape of Levy in 1629 by Samuel de Champlain. The Cape of Levy became thereafter the Seigneurie of Lauzon in 1636. This seigniory belonged to Jean de Lauzon (Lauson), which was governor of the News-France of 1651 with 1656. As of the beginnings of its colonization in 1647, the territory accepted the toponym Point-of-Levy and it was adopted by the St-Joseph parish-mother of Point-Levy. The seigniory will be dismantled in 1836 and from there will be born several small municipalities and villages on the Bank-South from Quebec.
Guillaume Seams: first French colonist of Point-Levy
Guillaume Couture was born on January 14th 1618 with Saint-Godard-of Rouen in Normandy. Carpenter of trade and ignored hero of News-France, it was a Coureur of the wood, one given of the Jesuits and an interpreter near the Amerindian tribes (in particular Huron and the Iroquois). He was interpreter for the signature of the first peace treaty (bringing together the French and Iroquois) in the area of Three-Rivers in 1645. May 15th, 1647, it was rewarded by the governor for News-France, Charles Jacques Huault de Montmagny, which granted to him a ground with the seigniory of Lauzon (unoccupied) in Point-Levy (sector Is Town of Lévis). In 1663, it discovered the Lac Mistassini and in 1690, as captain of the militia, it pushed back the troops of the admiral Phips in Point-Levy. It was then 72 years old. It is deceased with the Hôtel-Dieu of Quebec, on April 4th 1701, but the place of his burial is not known.

Lévis has several military forts and installations which were to protect the St-Laurent river, and the town of Quebec, in the event of an American or European invasion.
- Three forts: no.1, no.2 (demolished in the middle of the years 1960) and no.3 (partially demolished in 1940). These forts were built in the years 1860, after the American American Civil War.
- the Fort of Martinière: complex soldier made up in two parts (Upper and Lower) built in 1907 and used at the time of the First War and the Second world war.
- the military camp of Lauzon (today Park of Peace): It acts military field of practice which was used by the British and Canadian soldiers until the Second world war.
District-general of the Regiment of the Boiler and the 6th field artillery Regiment.
The Régiment of the Boiler was born on December 15th, 1936, of the fusion of the Regiment of Dorchester and Beauce and the 5th Machine Gun Battalion. Its currency, Aere Perennius (more solid than bronze) was proposed by the major Gavan Powers. This regiment is recognized for its participation in the unloading of Normandy, on June 6th, 1944. It is based with the military Horse-gear of Lévis (building builds in 1911). The 6th Regiment of Field artillery is a consituée Canadian military unit on August 1st, 1899. It is made up of two sub-units, that is to say the 57e Batterie located at Lévis, the 58e Batterie of Anti-aircraft artillery located at Valcartier and the 59e Batterie located at Montmagny.
Creation of the largest maritime building site of Canada by the Davie family in 1825
Since 1825, the building sites Davie (A.C Davie, Georges T. Davie & sounds and Davie Shipbuildings Co. (currently Davie Quebec Inc.)) several types of ships for naval transport built, the military navy (in particular of the sonars), as well as drilling rigs.
The foundation of the town of Lévis
The Bank-South of Quebec has a complex history shown by an evolution which was characterized, with the wire of the centuries, by its development plan economic, maritime, railway and industrial. The territorial expansion of the Bank-South must with the birth of several municipalities and cities which were amalgamated thereafter between the middle of the 19th century and the beginning of the 21e century.
Saint-Joseph-of-the-Point-Levy (or Saint-Joseph de Lévis) is the first parish/municipality of the Bank-South of Quebec which was famous village of Lauzon in 1910. Lauzon will become a city then a City in the years 1950 and will become again a city with the beginning of the year 1980. The town of Lévis was born in the west from Lauzon, on May 18th, 1861, under the initiative of Mgr Joseph-David Déziel. Lévis was constituted by the regrouping of the municipality of Our-Lady-of-the-Victoire and the Town of Aubigny (1849-1861). Its municipal denomination was selected in the honor of François-Gaston, knight, lord and duke of Lévis (1719-1787), hero of the Bataille of Holy-Foy in 1760. The first elected mayor is Mr. Louis Carrier in station of 1861 to 1870.
Municipal fusions of 1989-1990 and 2002
The first great phase of municipal fusions in the area of Lévis took place in 1989 with Lauzon and Saint-David-in-the Auberivière in 1990. The second phase took place on January 1st, 2002 with the cities and municipalities of Saint-Romuald, Pintendre, Breakeyville, Charny, Saint Nicolas's Day, Saint-Redeemer, Saint-Etienne-of-Lauzon, Saint-Joseph-of-Lévis (the agricultural sector) and Saint-Jean-Chrysostome.

the family home of Louis Fréchette (1839 - 1908). It lived there during the first thirteen years of its life. Set up by his/her father between 1837 and 1841, the Native house of Louis Fréchette Marie at the same time the neo-classic style and the architecture of New England of the 17th century and 18th century. This dwelling out of wooden is made up of a principal main building of a stage and half, capped with a roof of average slope to two slopes with the prolonged drips, and with a perpendicular lengthening-piece, with broken roof. It is located in the Desjardins district of the town of Lévis and occupies a narrow ground between the St. Lawrence river and cliff. It also occupies a place cultural (cf the festival supra).

In addition to the Davie building site and Movement Desjardins, one counts also three other important companies: the Jean-Gaulin refinery of the company Ultramar (Saint-Romuald sector), the factory Frito-Lay (Lauzon sector) which manufactures croustilles and commercial bakery Multi-Marks (sector Old man-Lauzon).

Transport
The Bridge of Quebec and the Pont Pierre-Laporte give access the Ville of Quebec. The access is located in the south-western sector of Lévis, with the limits of the old towns of St-Romuald and St-Nicolas. One can move there by highway 20 and the Boulevard of the Bank-South (a section of road 132 which was renamed in the years 1990).
