The Monday Day of the Week located after the Sunday and before the Tuesday. Traditionally the second day of the week, he is however regarded in a modern way as the first day of the week in certain countries.

Etymology

In French, as in the majority of the Romance languages, the word “Monday” is derived from the Latin lunae dies meaning “day of the the Moon”. Thus one says lunedi in Italian, the moons in Spanish (Castilian), dilun in Occitan, etc

In the Germanic languages, it derives from Mani, the Germanic god of the Moon. There is thus in English Monday forged on moon , in German Montag forged on Mond , etc

In Asia, several languages express Monday like “the first day”. In Chinese for example, it is named xingqi yi , which means “day 1 of the week”.

On the contrary , in Arab, Armenian, Géorgien, Greek, Hebrew, Persan and Portuguese, the literal translation of the term indicating Monday is “second day”.

Placement in the week

In the majority of the countries of Europe, in Australia, South America and in certain countries of Africa and Asia, Monday is regarded as the first day of the week. The standard ISO 8601 also considers that the week begin with Monday.

In other places, Monday is regarded as the second day of the week. It is traditionally the case in the United Kingdom, the Canada and the the United States.

Currently, much of cultures regard Monday as the beginning of the week worked, just after the Week-end. The countries of the the Middle East begin the working week the Saturday, Israel the Sunday.

Religions
