Lérot

The lérot ( Eliomys quercinus ) is a Rongeur of the family of the Myoxidae.

Identification

The lérot is small a Mammifère of about fifteen centimetres (sexual dimorphism?) without the tail and from approximately 60 to 140 grams. The black around the eyes (giving him an aspect of masked gangster), contrast between brown gray peeling ventral white and dorsal, the long two-tone tail at widened end make it possible to recognize it easily. It belongs to a group of old rodents (the Myoxidae) and has at the same time Incisive S to corrode and pointed teeth of Carnassier.

Lifestyle

It is an at the same time terrestrial and arboricolous animal with night manners which sleeps the day in a nest hidden in a hole of tree, an old bird's nest (even a nesting box) or human building and goes down on the ground to nourish itself. Like the others myoxidae (Dormouse S, Muscardin S) European it hibernates and enters into complete Léthargie during the winter (disturbed by error it does not awake therefore).

Food

Its food mode includes/understands fruits (one can see it easily the evenings of summer in the fruit trees) of bays and various seeds but as of the Insecte S even of other small animals smaller as him. It is not rare besides, in particular at the time of the season of the loves, to see a lérot undertaking to devour one of its rivals unlucky person. This Cannibalisme is also observed, in a recurring way, with leaving the hibernation.

Habitat

The lérot lives in the orchards, the gardens and parks (it is more frequent in the human entourage than the Muscardin or the dormouse). He easily attends the attics (where he can make Disturbance of the peace at night) and abandoned buildings.

Reproduction

In general, the females have only one range per annum from 2 to 7 small. The coupling occurs in April - May, gestation lasts 3 weeks. Sexual maturity is reached at the end of one year. Longevity is from 3 to 4 years in nature. With their birth, the small ones measure 4 cm except tail, are pink and blind (closed eyelids), their cries are acute (ultrasounds) and their astonishing mobility. It is possible, in the event of death of the mother, to replace her by traditional a regular milk contribution (cow) put beforehand at room temperature or hardly warmed, using a syringe, three times per day. By experiment, milk for kitten in low age is not inevitably adapted to them, but the opinions differ. It appears PARAMOUNT NOT TO CHANGE MILK. The distribution is largely facilitated by their obvious co-operation. A light gray sleeping bag develops quickly and their strength increases in same measurement. The first obvious distinctive sign appears on the level of the contour of the eyes, still closed, which is decorated of a black trail characteristic of the species. Predatory

The lérot can be the victim of the long pitchforks and the cats and the night birds (owls and owls) which attend the same habitat.

Distribution

The lérot meets in all average Europe, of the west coast (absent from Scandinavia, Great Britain and Balkans) to the Ural in the east. It is also present in minor Asia.

Characteristics

  • the lérot is able to lose and give up its tail (a little as the lizards) when it is attacked by a predator. The rate of survival of the animal after this loss is to be defined.
