Léopold Victor Charner

Léopold Victor Charner (born the February 13rd 1797 with Saint-Brieuc - died the February 7th 1869 with Paris) was a French soldier of the 19th century which took part in many campaigns under the Restauration, the Monarchie of July and the Second Empire and tried to make a political career after the Révolution of 1848.

Biography

Léopold Victor Charner was the son of an established Swiss distiller of origin with Saint-Brieuc. It was allowed with the imperial school of the Navy of Toulon in February 1812. Named candidate of first class at the beginning 1815, it was promoted Enseigne of vessel in 1820, then Lieutenant in 1828.

It carried out many campaigns and took part in particular in the Expédition of Algiers. Lieutenant commander in 1837, he was second in command of the Belle Hen when this frigate brought back Sainte-Hélène ashes of the emperor Napoleon 1st.

After the Revolution of 1848, Charner was elected appointed in the department of the Coast-of-North and until in 1851 remained it. Promoted Rear-admiral the February 3rd 1852, after a passage to the cabinet of the Minister for the Navy Theodore Ducos, it was named in July 1853 with the command as a second of the squadron of the Ocean.

In 1840, it buys the malouinière of the High-Mound, in Saint-Suliac (35).

In 1857, it makes build a manor with vault and body of guard on grounds then close to Dune S but which will be thereafter in the heart of the Valley-Andre, balneal part of Pléneuf created as from 1880. One of the principal streets bears its name and its inheritance became by purchase in 1954, the park of Admiralty .

At the time of the Crimean War, it took part in the operations of Yalta and Sébastopol. Vice-admiral the June 7th 1855, he becomes member of the Conseil of Work of the Navy , which he will chair of 1858 1860.

The February 4th 1860, the Charner vice-admiral receives the command as a head of the naval division of the China Seas and the forces of ground and sea in Cochinchine. It took part for this reason in the conquest of the Cochinchine, where it organized the colony before being recalled in France to the end of the year 1861.

Promoted Grand Cross of the Legion of honor the February 10th 1861, named irremovable senator the February 12th 1862, Léopold Victor Charner was high with the dignity of Admiral de France the November 15th 1864. He died in Paris the February 7th 1869. Its funerals took place with the Invalides in Paris. It was buried in its birthplace of Saint-Brieuc, in the Saint-Michel cemetery.

Homage

Several warships of the French Marine bore the name of Léopold Victor Charner:
  • a Cruiser - Armoured, torpedoed by the Germans close to the Syrian coasts the February 8th 1916 (374 dead);
  • a Sloop - Escorteur builds with Lorient at the end of the Années 1950. Launched the March 12th 1960 the sloop-escort ship Admiral Charner was affected with the division of the sloops of the Pacific and was based with PAPEETE 1963 with 1980. Withdrawn of the active service in 1990, it takes again the sea in 1991, under house urugayen, under the name of Montevideo .

One knows two portraits of the admiral Charner:
  • a table of Eugene Faure, preserved at Versailles, the national museum of the castle and Trianons;
  • a table of Adolphe Dervaux, preserved at Saint-Brieuc, the museum of art and history of the Coast-with Armor.
