Léopold Einstein

Léopold Einstein was a German esperantist, journalist. Born in 1834, it died the September 8th 1890 with Nuremberg.

One of the first pioneers of the Esperanto. Zamenhof wrote of him that its name should be registered in gold letters in the history of Esperanto. Partisan for a long time of a universal language, it published in 1885 a German treaty, Histoire of the attempts at world language since Leibniz until our jours and under its impulse was founded on February 18th, 1885 “Weltsprache-Verein Nürnberg” (association of Nuremberg for a world language) which adopted the Volapük, but it was itself militant burning of the idea of world language rather than of this language of which it saw the defects and of which it did not hesitate to say: “If something of a little better than Volapük appeared, I would be the first to inform it the world”. He did not write of them less approximately two hundred articles in his favor.

During the summer 1888 it accepted the first and the second handbook of Esperanto, language which it controlled at the end of very little time. Its enthusiasm was such as eight weeks later appeared in Nuremberg its booklet entitled “the lingvo internacia” as the best solution of the problem of the world language internationale. It could convince the members of his association, so that at the general meeting of December 1888 the majority of the members decided for Esperanto, “language new and better” to take again the expression of Einstein. Thus the first club of Esperanto of the world was born in Nuremberg. The first president was Christian Schmidt.

During the little of time which remained to him to be lived, Léopold Einstein, thanks to its German booklets, provided the foundations of the movement esperantist in Germany at the time when, for political reasons, the language was going almost to disappear in Russia
