Léo Tindemans

Léo Tindemans (born in 1922) is a political man Belgian of tendency democratic Christian woman, Prime Minister of 1974 with 1978 - 1979. He is member of CD&V.

Convinced federalist, it is famous for his report/ratio of the political union of the Europe of 1975. Antwerp ois, it studies political sciences with the catholic Université of Leuwen. Initially journalist and civil servant, he undertakes a political career. Deputy (1961 - 1989), Minister for the Community Businesses Flemish in 1970, then of Agriculture and the Working class (1971 - 1973).

In 1974 the Summit of Paris load Léo Tindemans, which has just been appointed Prime Minister of Belgium, to define a overall concept of the European Union. Léo Tindemans poses that the European Union is not an end in itself, but a stage on the way of the unification. In December 1975, the Tindemans report/ratio is presented to the European Council and is published. Tindemans recommends in his report/ratio a monetary union (what will be in fine concretized by the Euro), a reinforcement of the capacity parliamentary, a common security policy and foreign and the creation of a European agency of the armament.

It leaves the post of Prime Minister in 1978. Foreign Minister (1981 - 1989), president of the European Popular party (EPP) (1976 - 1985), several times appointed (in particular during the 47e legislature of the Room of the Representatives of Belgium (1988-1991)), he is honorary president of the EPP.
