Toponymy

The toponym Lées /l be appears in the forms Léès (1215, cartulaire of évêché of Oloron), Leet (1449, payments of the Court Majour de Béarn), (1538, reformation of Béarn), Sancta-Maria de Lées (1603, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron).

The village of Athas /at ' a' S appears as for him in the forms Atas (1250, for of Winder), Sanctus Felix d' Atas and Feels Phelip d' Ataas (1608, insinuations of the diocese of Oloron). Athas is probably a derivative in - atz/-have Basque athe “carries”.

History

In 1385, Lées counted 29 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Winder.
Paul Raymond mentions the existence of a laic, vassal abbey of the Viscount of Béarn.
